I remember hearing about the big Earthquake in San Francisco in 1989 while I was in my livingroom there.

I'm writing to ask if you know what happened to the house I lived in. I can't find it on Google Maps. I forget the number, but I can tell you where it was. It was on the North Side of the street between Gold and Sherman. Behind the fence was that cock-eyed building which is now Siskiyou Christian Fellowship. I think it was a school then, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I can't find the house. I'm wondering if it burned down. But I remember the shape and the house next door and none of the houses there now resemble these.

Do you think you can find out for me?

Thanks!
~J. It had turrets and was turned into apartments in the 1950's. My mother and us 3 kids returned to Yreka in 1956. We rented a duplex next door to this house my mother spent her summers in as a child. I remember going over to visit and see the house. It had a very large wooden staircase. I have pictures of the outside of the house with my older sister as a toddler. That would have been about 1944. I do not remember the address but it was walking distance to the main street. My grandparents were Jospeh and Vera Fletcher. They lived in San Francisco most of the year. I remember the art deco interior quite well, including the pink "floral design" fabric wallpaper and the exquisite translucent deco lamp shades in the theater auditorium. I also have memories of watching the annual county fair parade that used to run down Miner and Broadway streets literally sitting on the metal rooftop of the marquee. I've heard that the the theater has long since closed down, sadly. I only have a few pictures of the concession stand in the lobby, dating from about 1962 or '63. - Sue NeimoyerSuehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11671329816793529575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4940611489190367707.post-33371221430629842312017-02-25T21:20:19.230-08:002017-02-25T21:20:19.230-08:00Thanks! I reached out to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Posse who operates out of this former school house. A volunteer replied that this is the former Greenhorn School which was erected around 1910 and relocated to its current site and donated to the Posse around 1968. The volunteer who replied to my inquiry stated he discovered some old school books and kids finger painting kits in the attic a few years ago. I know that a lot of times, the stained glass windows get carefully removed and sold before demolition. I can try calling Girdner's Funeral Home and inquire about it. Our priest loved that window and if we can locate it, I don't doubt he would even travel to visit it. I will ask Girdner's but if anyone knows the company in charge of the demolition, I think that could be the best lead. He (our priest) tasked us with finding info on the window as a fun thing to do and when he said that I took special interest in the idea. I love architecture and stained glass windows, so it would be remarkable to come through for him. Not long ago I wanted to do some research on the building and contacted the current Methodist Church (that was built to replace this one in another location) and no one there had any history on the building. The minister was Father Holt; he and his wife lived in the little house to the immediate west of the Church, which I see is also still standing. I lived with them for several months in the 1950-51 time frame (some family legal issue). My Dad, an avid fisherman, repeatedly invited Fr. Holt to go trout fishing on the weekend and every time Fr. Holt would tell him "I just can't go --- I've got to work to beat Hell on Sundays". John Gardnernoreply@blogger.com
